  • Hello. My name is Roger Hurst and during the 1990’s I carried out extensive research into one branch of my ancestors on the maternal side. The name being Matson who were farmers and land owners in East Kent as well as the family branches who moved to other areas. The above notebook does indeed seem linked to the Matson family and several of the names referred to are recorded in my research. For example:
Although recorded in the Public Records Office as a “Carpenter” here is some detail of the John who may have written the notebook –
1798 Land Tax for St. Margarets at Cliff and Oxney shows John Matson senr. as due for 2 shillings on the 19th June 1798.
There is a 1798 Land Tax Record for 1798 which has John Matson as landlord of Susanna Knot 10 shillings and as owner occupier £2.2 shillings.
    Will dated 16th June 1824 and proved 30th October 1824. (Probate11/1691)
The Carpentry Workshop occupied by Joseph Knott is left to son John Matson.
There are several other Land tax records covering the period of 1792 up to 1827 for both John Senior and John Junior.
Alive in 1824. Inherited his fathers Carpentry workshop.
John Of St. Margarets-at- Cliffe married 14th July 1825 to Hannah Plamer of Upchurch.
1841 Census records a John Matson aged 50 and a builder living at St. Margarets-at-Cliffe with wife Hannah aged 45. The record also shows that a John Matson was the census enumerator.
    1851 census aged 60
1861 census records John Matson (70) as brother to Mary Upton (68) who is described as head of Household at St.Margarets-at-Cliffe and whose address also records Hannah Matson (75) who is sister-in-law to Mary Upton
1871 census shows John as aged 80, born about 1791 in St. Margaret.
It’s important to be aware that there were many people named John Matson, however several of the names mentioned in the notebook do occur in family links by marriage to various members of the Matson family. KCC archives do have a copy of my document entitled “The Matson Family of East Kent” which I hope may help with further research. As more information has come forward since I compiled the document, if you think I may be able to help further please contact me via the editors of this website,
