Brotherstone, St Margaret's Bay. c1896
Black and white photograph of Brotherstone, a house above St Margaret’s Bay. A note on the reverse states ‘built by M Walter Emden, mother named it South Lawn’, with an unidentified signature. Annotated ‘about 1896’.
Believed to be the first house designed by Walter Emden in St Margaret’s, Brotherstone was also the name of the house that the family were living in at Islington at the time as shown by the 1881 Census.
The house is known as South Lawn today (2013).
Walter Emden was a well known architect and was responsible for several London theatres including The Garrick, Terry’s, The Duke of York, The Tivoli and The Court.
He was Mayor of Dover from 1907 to 1910.
