Edith Curling - Defence of the Realm Permit Book No. 130269

This is a permit issued to Edith Curling in 1916 under the Defence of the Realm Act 1914 (DORA). This act gave the government wide ranging powers during the war (WW1) such as the power to requisition buildings and land needed for the war effort and restricted a number of peacetime activities in order to secure public safety and the defence of the realm.

A permit such as this was required for particular purposes such as, in this case, to enter a Special Military Area. Hope Farm was in such an area. Edith Curling resided in Hope Farm at this time.
