St Margaret's Church tower in ruins AD 1860 [Very inaccurate date].
A mounted black and white picture of the church of St Margaret of Antioch, St Margaret’s at Cliffe, in a state of disrepair and dated 1860. This is probably copied from an illustrated guide book which dates from earlier in the 19th century – possibly 1845. See SMHS/2011.4785a/THE CHURCH/1/8. An illustration in the Gentleman’s Magazine of 1803 (SMHS/2011.4782) shows the church in a similar state of disrepair. The date of 1773 in brickwork on the south side of the tower is probably the actual date at which this particular collapse was made good.

It is interesting to note that the sister church of St Augustine, East Langdon, now also incorporated into the St Margaret’s benefice, was restored “from its ruinous state” in 1892,.
