The Society was founded in 1868 as the Surrey County Benefit Society but soon grew to become a national healthcare organisation and became the largest of the Friendly Societies.

Typescript transcript of an article from the Dover Express, 23 July 1920 – ‘The National Deposit Friendly Society, on Friday last, opened the Portal House, formerly Morley House, which is for the use of the members as a convalescent home. It has been entirely renovated and has over 100 beds’.
