Hillside, Granville Road
Towards the end of the nineteenth century the Rt. Hon. Earl Granville owned a substantial amount of land in and around St Margaret’s. After his retirement from politics he took a more active interest in developing his land and ‘Hillside’ was the first house to be built on Granville Road after the construction of the Granville Hotel. The house has passed through a number of hands including a celebrated dental surgeon, the wife of a merchant and colonial agent, the widow of a wine merchant and mother of a soldier awarded the DSO and Victoria Cross, an artist, and a captain in the Royal Flying Corps who married the daughter of an American millionaire.
