Village farms

The main occupation in St Margaret's for hundreds of years was farming.
Many villagers were farm labourers or engaged in related work like blacksmithing. Local children minded livestock and everyone helped at harvest time. The village has had at least thirteen farms at different times.
Some, like Bockhill Farm,Wanstone Farm, East Valley Farm, Reach Manor Court Farm and Bere Farm are still operating today but others like Street Farm and Townsend Farm have been built over, although they were once a major part of the centre of the village. Hope Farm, situated beyond the Dover Patrol Memorial near Hope Point, was taken over by the army during the Second World War and demolished.
