1861 census returns for the Cave in the Cliff St Margaret's Bay
The 1861 census return for the Cave in the Cliff where the watchman for the Channel telegraph cable lived temporarily.
In 1861 there were 21 households in the Bay, two of them are empty houses, but ten of the 18 are Coastguard families.
the cave entry reads
Address :‘Cave in Cliff’, residence of Thomas Adams 41 and his wife Ann 42, Watchman of the submarine telegraph’
This was a cave below the lower lighthouse. It had two cables to France one laid in 1850/1 and one to Belgium laid in 1853.
