A seven-page account of the history of postal services in the village from census records and street directories. The earliest reference is in the 1851 census. Hammond Upton was in charge of postal services for the village of St Margaret’s at Cliffe and St Margaret’s Bay. In 1861 he was described as sub-postmaster and a shoemaker. Subsequent postmasters were Henry Gage 1880s, William Henry Newing 1890s, J B Madge from about 1899, A E Doubleday 1917, H Dyus 1922, R J Gough 1924. Between 1932 and 1935 Mr Gough opened The Droveway Post Office.
