A series of photographs of the stricken sailing ship Preussen from the Gordon Denoon album with Gordon’s observations.
The wreck is further mentioned in his book ‘Saga of St Margaret’s’:-
‘The ship was firmly held in the rocks quite close to the chalk cliff, never to move again. At least twelve tugs had tried to refloat her. Eventually a start was made to unload the cargo and many small boats from Dover brought sightseers; in fact a tour of the ship for visitors was organised. Many of the smaller commodities on board were sold as momentoes and later a number of people acknowledged ownership of goods formerly belonging to the ship. Mrs Groves (landlady of the Cliffe) told me of some who had acquired sewing machines, chairs and crockery. She knew one person who had a dinner service of more than ordinary value. Mr and Mrs Groves had visited the wrecked ship and told me of many interesting details. He had bought a load of timber – big stuff which needed a horse-drawn wagon for transporting back to the hotel’
