Wellard's Livery Stables, Chapel Lane. c1910
Wellard’s stables were an important feature of village life, providing transport to and from Martin Mill Station, to the village and the Bay and to and from Dover from about 1907 to 1935.
Starting mainly with horse-drawn transport they also had an omnibus as early as 1907 and by 1917 were described as a bus and taxi proprietor. By 1928 they were described as a garage suggesting the horses had been completely replaced by the car.
A 1907 guide to the village records
‘JR Wellard, Queens Mews. Omnibus, brake and fly proprietor. Livery and bait stables. First class close and open carriages. Trains met to order. Carrier to and from Dover.’
