All her crew were saved and the cargo recovered. The bell was sold to Buckland School and some of the timber was said to have been used in building Eglnton Cottage on the beach. There are articles concerning the wreck, the recovery of the cargo and the deposition of the ship’s Master, Captain John Nimmo Wardrop.
The Earl of Eglinton was a fully rigged ship of 1275 tons, built at Troon in Scotland in 1854 and owned by J Mitchell of Glasgow. She was regularly in the Indian and Australian trade.
