Round Britain Air Race viewed from South Foreland Lighthouse. 1910/11
Black and white photograph of a group of people standing at the top of the South Foreland Upper Light.
The notes included with the photo state:
“1st £1000 Daily Mail Race round England
Early in the morning
Mother, Dad, Aunt Helen, myself with the Chief Keeper and Mr Davies & his sister after waiting all night”
There is a small shape in the sky to the left of the Lighthouse which is an aeroplane.
Research has suggested that this is not the first Daily Mail Round Britain Air race of 1911 as that route did not include Dover. It may be an earlier cross channel race.
